Diane Rooney is hosting a book study group via Zoom. She welcomes participants from both churches and the community to join in. Email her at dianerooney123@gmail.com to be added to the group.
The group will start off by finishing up Adam Hamilton’s book on The Lord’s Prayer and then will choose one of the following books to study:
- The Whole Language (The power of Extravagant Tenderness) by Gregory Boyle. Gregory Boyle is a Jesuit priest who began what has become Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles. He has had two previous books all of which focus on his ministry with gangs and the transformation of gang members through his gang intervention programs. His other books are Tattoos on the Heart and Barking to the Choir.
- Just Mercy (A Story of Justice and redemption) by Bryan Stevenson. Bryan is the Founder of the Equal Justice Initiative in Alabama. He has dedicated his work to defending the poor, wrongly condemned and those trapped in the furthest reaches of our criminal justice system. This book focuses on one of his first cases representing Walter McMillian, a young man sentenced to die for a murder he did not commit. His work has freed many individuals who have been wrongly convicted of crimes. His work challenges the bias against the poor and people of color.
- Take this Bread (A spiritual memoir of a twenty-first century Christian) by Sara Miles.This book focuses on Sara’s personal journey of faith having been raised an atheist. Her faith centered on real hunger, real food and real bodies. She has now turned the bread she received at communion into tons of groceries and food pantries in the poorest part of their city.
